The University of West London student accommodation which is located close to the M4 motorway is a public university in the United Kingdom. It has campuses in Ealing and Brentford in Greater London, as well as in Reading and Berkshire. In 2018 UWL was ranked as the top modern university in London and the 8th modern university in the UK.
Our client Axis Europe contracted Embassy Site Services as part of a phased project to erect scaffolding at the University’s Brentford campus, called Paragon, initially to 2 blocks; B and F.
Embassy Site Services won this project following actions carried out at a previous job. Whilst measuring up a building for our client Engie, one of the Embassy team was approached by someone from Axis who also happened to be on site that day. They were so impressed by the level of detail that was being recorded for the project, this led to a meeting with the team at Axis where we expressed interest in pricing up projects for them. This has since led to us winning several jobs with Axis worth up to £1M.
The job itself to erect the scaffolding at the Brentford campus had some challenges, where special ties were required. We had to use tech screws drilled into the steelwork and we had to obtain the DWG drawings (drawings that outline the building itself before it’s built) because you can’t see what’s behind the cladding. These drawings were required so we could see where the steels were, so we could remove the cladding and drill into the tiling. Whilst this took a very long time to do, it was a necessary process.
Operationally this location was challenging as this is a working University, so we had to be mindful of the hundreds of people that were within the vicinity every day. The University also has a live school and halls of residence, so we had to be considerate during all hours of the day. This is a very difficult environment to erect scaffolding when there are so many people around. So much consideration was required to ensure that we completed the job with the least amount of disruption as possible.
The Embassy team did incredibly well on this project and are due credit for how they managed this very busy location.
“The Axis Paragon team were lovely people to have worked with on this project. They were all very down to earth and they worked so professionally with us.”
